SANYO ‘eneloop bike’ Testing Begins in Yosemite National Park by DNC Associates

SANYO-Eneloop-BICYCLE

eneloop bike offers a unique way to enjoy the park in its majestic nature

SANYO North America Corporation (SANYO), has provided 10 of its pedal-assist hybrid electric bicycles, the eneloop bike, to Delaware North Companies Parks & Resorts at Yosemite, Inc. (DNC), the organization that operates hotels, restaurants and activities in Yosemite National Park located in east central California. SANYO, a world leader in environmental green technology, has introduced DNC associates to a new way of moving around the park without using gas powered vehicles. DNC received both the CY-SPA600NA and the new CY-SPH600NA models of the eneloop bike.

On the use of the eneloop bike in the park, Mr. Colin Baldock, General Manager of Guest Recreation for DNC Parks & Resorts at Yosemite, Inc. said, “The eneloop bike is a product that has obviously taken the environment into consideration, and a product that can contribute to preserving the beauty of this natural environment. DNC associates are enjoying riding the bikes and we are reviewing the appropriate application within our organization.” On a more personal note, he added, “I have been riding the bike for the last two months and love it. I sometimes look for a longer way to work just to spend more time on the bike. Riding up hills requires much less effort than on a conventional pedal bike. The eneloop bike hybrid pedal-assist concept certainly aligns itself with DNC’s Green Path environmental stewardship initiatives.”

Yosemite National Park became a national park in 1890, and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. With over 3.9 million people visiting Yosemite last year, it is not only one of the Unites States’ most famous national parks, but it is also recognized by visitors from all over the world. With almost 95% of the park designated as wilderness, the majority of the visitors to the park spend time in Yosemite Valley, an area of seven square miles. This concentration of visitors to one location of limited size has led to concern over air pollution and the handling of waste in recent years.

SANYO’s eneloop bike (CY-SPA600NA) received the “Best of Innovations” Award in the Eco-Design and Sustainable Technology Category at the 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show.

The eneloop bike features a regenerative charging system similar to hybrid automobiles, which allows the bike to re-generate energy, replenishing part of its power needs through regenerative coasting and braking. The bike is equipped to not only generate energy but to store energy as well, thereby eliminating emissions and encouraging the preservation of the natural environment. The power available from its engine is also powerful enough to assist weaker riders on hills and steep inclines, allowing for a light and pleasant riding experience.

Sam Murata, President of SANYO North America Corporation commented, “We feel honored to be able to contribute in providing one of our environmental solutions to one of the world’s most famous spots of natural beauty, Yosemite National Park. With SANYO’s environmental and energy-related technologies and products, we would like to deepen our relationship both with DNC and other national parks and monuments to help provide solutions that will offer enjoyment to cyclists while serving a practical purpose of preserving the environment.”

SVNETWORK-FARMVILLE

SVnetwork's engagement for Microsoft Bing on Zynga's Farmville nominated in the social media campaign category for online advertising creativity

SVnetwork, the Web’s largest performance brand advertising network and technology platform, has been recognized in MediaPost’s 2010 OMMA Awards nominations for its work with Deep Focus on the social media engagement for Microsoft Bing on Zynga’s Farmville. The campaign is a finalist in the Online Advertising Creativity category, which recognizes campaigns that demonstrate outstanding strategic and creative execution for a client or brand.

SVnetwork, which reaches over 80 million consumers every month, developed an interactive engagement that drove unprecedented results for Bing’s fan following by offering a unique value exchange for Farmville players who interacted with the Bing brand.  The wildly successful promotion delivered over 425,000 Facebook fans for Bing in just one day.  Even more impressive was the ROI of the campaign, with 70% of the newly acquired fans visiting the search engine in the month following the engagement. The campaign was also recently recognized as one of Forbes’ “Best-Ever Social Media Campaigns” of all time.

“Collaborating with Deep Focus delivered incredible social media results for Bing,” said SVnetwork CEO Jay Samit. “Having the OMMA Awards recognize the power of interactive brand engagements to create impact validates the experience of our 80 million consumers.”

By developing the Web’s most cost-effective solution for advertisers to engage a targeted audience of connected consumers, SVnetwork provides scalable distribution for performance brand marketing in digital media. SVnetwork’s unique brand advertising platform charges advertisers only when a consumer has engaged with their brand, as opposed to per impression.  Across millions of engagements, SVnetwork is proven to deliver campaigns with 100 times higher click rates than banner or display advertising.

Three Out of Four Students Skip Actual Class and Attend Virtually Through Streaming Technology

College Students Headed Back to Class (Not Really) This Fall

Students across the U.S. are heading back to their college campuses this week, bringing images of crowded classrooms and backpack-toting students flooding the halls of universities. But many of them aren’t really headed back to class. According to a survey released today by InterCall, the world’s largest conferencing and collaboration services provider, college students are increasingly attending and viewing their lectures by watching streaming video online. While some students like streaming because it allows them to spend more time with friends or sleeping, many students are simply juggling heavy course loads and their part-time jobs while enrolled in universities.

College students across the U.S. agree that having their classes streamed over the Internet or video recordings archived online helps them better prepare for exams (74 percent), learn more effectively (53 percent) or helps them see an improvement in their grades (54 percent).

“The research clearly shows how new technologies – specifically streaming – are changing college experiences all over the U.S.,” said Ben Chodor, senior vice president of InterCall Streaming. “It does not surprise us that students are seeing the benefits of technologies such as ours. By streaming course content, professors and universities are providing students with the flexibility and interactivity that helps them excel and creates the educational experience that benefits them most.”

The survey polled college students ages 18 to 25 about their attitudes and behaviors towards streamed video content of their college courses. Additional findings from the survey include:

  • Use of streaming is on the rise – Eight in ten students (78 percent) report that professors have made lectures available either by live video feed or posting a videotaped lecture for students to access online. Nearly a third (30 percent) say their professors use web streaming frequently.
  • In two places at once – Almost half (48 percent) of students take multiple classes scheduled for the same time which was virtually impossible before streaming. Also, 63 percent “attend” classes even though they are in reality, out of town.
  • Juggling jobs and studies – Streaming helps those students who are working their way through school: 47 percent say having content available to view at a later time allows them to work more hours at their job.
  • Students are taking control over the way they learn – Nearly 60 percent say streaming video allows them to spend more time studying by themselves and grasp concepts better because they can go at their own pace (44 percent).
  • We want our streaming! – More than two-thirds (67 percent) of students said they wish more of their professors used streaming and the majority (85 percent) say they would find it helpful to have their classes live streamed or video posted online.
  • Parents just don’t understand – A third of U.S. students say that their parents or guardians would be very upset to know how often they actually attend classes in person because they “attend” by watching video of their course online. However, the majority of respondents report that streaming improves students’ performance and helps them balance school with work.

25 Percent of New Worms in 2010 Are Designed to Spread Through USB Devices

Computer Virus

48 percent of SMBs worldwide are infected every year; one third of these infections are caused by worms that spread on USB devices

PandaLabs, Panda Security’s antimalware laboratory, has discovered that in 2010, 25 percent of new worms have been specifically designed to spread through USB storage devices connected to computers. These types of threats can copy themselves to any device capable of storing information such as cell phones, external hard drives, DVDs, flash memories and MP3/4 players.

The data from Panda Security’s Second International SMB Security Barometer suggests that this distribution technique is highly effective. With survey responses from more than 10,470 companies across 20 countries, it was revealed that approximately 48 percent of SMBs (with up to 1,000 computers) admit to having been infected by some type of malware over the last year. As further proof, 27 percent confirmed that the source of the infection was a USB device connected to a computer.

According to Luis Corrons, Technical Director of PandaLabs, “At present, much of the malware in circulation has been designed to distribute through these devices. Not only does it copy itself to these gadgets, but it also runs automatically when a USB device is connected to a computer, infecting the system practically transparently to the user. This has been the case with many infections we have seen this year, such as the distribution of the Mariposa and Vodafone botnets.”

So far, these types of infections are still outnumbered by those that spread via email, but it is a growing trend. “There are now so many devices on the market that can be connected via USB to a computer: digital cameras, cell phones, MP3 or MP4 players,” adds Corrons. “This is clearly very convenient for users, but since all these devices have memory cards or internal memory, it is feasible that your cell phone could be carrying a virus without your knowledge.”

How Does it Work?

There is an increasing amount of malware which, like the dangerous Conficker worm, spreads via removable devices and drives such as memory sticks, MP3 players and digital cameras. The basic technique used is as follows: Windows uses the Autorun.inf file on these drives or devices to know which action to take whenever they are connected to a computer. This file, which is on the root directory of the device, offers the option to automatically run part of the content on the device when it connects to a computer. By modifying Autorun.inf with specific commands, cyber-crooks can enable malware stored on the USB drive to run automatically when the device connects to a computer, thus immediately infecting the computer in question.

To prevent this, Panda Security has developed Panda USB Vaccine, a free product which offers a double layer of preventive protection, disabling the AutoRun feature on computers as well as on USB drives and other devices.

“Since there is no simple way of disabling the AutoRun feature in Windows, this is a very useful tool that makes protection simple for users and offers a high level of security against infections through removable drives and devices,” explains Luis Corrons, Technical Director of PandaLabs.
